Conscious coincidence

How to use coincidence? Can coincidence be controlled? Does conscious coincidence exist?

These issues have been in my mind for two years since I started to perfom experiments with a unique, particular technic based on both coincidence and consciousness.

By choosing cotton jersey for my works made with pastel chalk, a material with special qualities (flexiblity, creasability), I opened the door for coincidence to enter into the creative process. Their incorporation in the painting and their scale of use is however the conscious control of coincidence.

It is a verified process and even though it contains random elements, it is the result of a conscious planning and progressive work. I've performed a number of experiments to be able to control, consciously produce, reproduce  random motifs and - by using them - be able to consciously create an individual style and motif system.

However, it may happen that the coincidence "starts to dictate". It pushes motifs in front of me tempting me to go for a different direction. Of course, I can decide to reject the "will" of the painting, wipe out the unexpected "offer" and go further in the direction I have planned. But it may happen that I like the "offer" I accept it and the redesign starts rolling out. (What is this? A message from  my subconscious mind? )

This is how my painting of "The miracle herd" came into being. When I accepted the will of the painting and began to develop it in the direction dictated, I recognized the wonderful work of expressing the mythical leader animal, the deer as a universal symbol, well known not only in the Hun-Hungarian mythology but that of the North American Indians and many  the Eurasian people.

I observed, the more chance I give to coincidence,  the more my paintings become surreal, and the greater the role of consciousness in the creative process is, the more romantic they are, while retaining their surrealism.

This ongoing dialogue between me and my painting entertains me.

I hope, that me and my painting can also include the viewer in this dialogue.
